Understanding The New Off-campus Working Cap On International Students

Understanding The New Off-campus Working Cap On International Students

The idea of coming as an international student to Canada offers both perks as well as costs. Many international students opt to work alongside their studies considering the financial liabilities an international degree carries. Keeping in mind the financial burden international studies can bring Canada allows its international students to work as a student in order to offset their living and education costs.

If you are an international student having a valid study permit and studying at a Designated Learning Institute (DLI), you are eligible to work. It must be kept in mind that to work as an international student there is a certain criterion that international students must adhere to while studying. The criteria are set forth with certain number of working hours and work hour limit is especially incorporated so that the students do not work too many hours which can negatively impact their study goals.

As of April of 2024, there has been some alteration to the number of working hours off-campus that the international students were allowed to work. The limit for on-campus and off-campus are different.  Before November 2022, the students were allowed to work for 20 hours off-campus per week when they have classes.

After November 2022, the 20 hour working cap per week was lifted and students were allowed to work for unlimited hours. Then in April 2024, the Canadian Government lifted this temporary policy by announcing a new working hours’ limit of 24 hours off-campus per week when the classes are in session whereas the policy of working unlimited when the classes are not in session (i.e. during regular breaks) is intact.

It is pertinent to note that the new policy was set to take effect the fall of 2024, however, the rules have not become effective yet. Currently, the 20 hours working cap is effective. The new policy was announced in order to facilitate international students to maintain a balance between their study and work goals. Therefore, it is recommended that international students research the specific work regulations and requirements for their province or territory before starting to work.
